I’ve just had the pleasure of watching the latest episode of Once Upon A Time, ‘Child Of The Moon’.
The episode begins with the dwarves finding diamonds in the mine, diamonds that can be turned into fairy dust (which can be used in conjunction with Jefferson’s hat to travel between worlds). The rest of the episode focuses on Ruby/Red and David/Charming’s relationship with his father, who has shown himself in Storybrooke as DA Spencer. On the night of the first full moon cycle, Ruby escapes her prison and the next morning 2 people are found dead. Assuming it was her, she decides to lock herself up again. Spencer rallies the townsfolk claiming David is protecting a murderer, and they become an angry mob. Ruby chains Belle up in the library instead of herself, claiming that she deserves to be punished for her sins. Granny and David discover that it was actually Spencer who killed the 2 people, and had Ruby’s cloak, and go to confront him. David calms the wolf, stating that he knows she can control it, and she does, allowing him to slip the cloak back onto her. Spencer has gone, and David and Ruby give chase, finding him next to a fire on the beach. He tells David he’ll never see his family again, and burns Jefferson’s hat.
The flashbacks throughout the episode deal with how Ruby learned to control the wolf. She is found by a pack and taken to the leader, which turns out to be her mother. After teaching her how to control the wolf, Snow enters their lair. The Queen’s men follow her and kill Quinn (the wolf who found Ruby), though the rest of the wolves make short work of the men. Rub’ys mother claims it was Snow’s fault and is about to kill her when Ruby intervenes in wolf form, and kills her mother. Ruby burries her, and says that Snow is her family as she’s the only person who hasn’t tried to change her.
Meanwhile, Henry wakes from a nightmare with an actual burn on his hand, and Regina (who was looking after him at the time) calls in expert help – Mr Gold. He tells them that when Henry was under the sleeping curse, he was actually in another world, and that he can’t stop him going there when he sleeps. However, he does give Henry something that allows him to control himself in the other world, and gives it to him for free as it’s Henry not Regina asking. The episode finishes with henry dreaming again and controlling the world to talk to Aurora. Aurora wakes in fairyworld and tells Snow and Emma what happened, that she spoke to Henry.
It was another very strong episode, as the previous Ruby episode was, and very enjoyable throughout. There was some overall plot development as well as the contained plot for the episode. I’m looking forward to seeing how they deal with trying to get Emma and Snow back without Jefferson’s hat, and I want more answers to other questions. Hopefully we’ll get some soon.
