“DOOM PATROL reimagines one of DC’s most beloved groups of Super Heroes: Robotman aka Cliff Steele (BRENDAN FRASER), Negative Man aka Larry Trainor (MATT BOMER), Elasti-Woman aka Rita Farr (APRIL BOWLBY) and Crazy Jane (DIANE GUERRERO), led by modern-day mad scientist Niles Caulder aka The Chief (TIMOTHY DALTON). Each member of the Doom Patrol suffered a horrible accident that gave them superhuman abilities, but also left them scarred and disfigured. Traumatized and downtrodden, the team found their purpose through The Chief, coming together to investigate the weirdest phenomena in existence. Following the mysterious disappearance of The Chief these reluctant heroes will find themselves in a place they never expected to be, called to action by none other than Cyborg (JOIVAN WADE), who comes to them with a mission hard to refuse. Part support group, part Super Hero team, the Doom Patrol is a band of superpowered freaks who fight for a world that wants nothing to do with them.”
Doom Patrol looks to be DC’s attempt to have their own version of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. There are no well-known super heroes in Doom Patrol. Most casual fans will have never heard of them. I’ve heard of the team, but recognize none of the members. In my opinion, Cyborg is being included for the purpose of having a better known character in the show. Doom Patrol is also a spin-off of Titans, but Niles Caulder is recast with Timothy Dalton. It is unclear at this moment as to whether the shows appearing on the DC Universe streaming service are part of the Arrowverse, or the DCEU movie universe, but with the recasting of Cyborg, I’m hoping they are parts of the Arrowverse, and not another recasting in the DCEU. I really hope it’s not the start of another DC continuity.
The show looks interesting and looks to have fairly solid special effects. Robotman looks to be rather stiffly acted as a man in a suit, but that may serve the character. The biggest problem the series serves will be the DC Universe exclusivity. I know I’m not rushing to be a subscriber at this time.
