The Our Flag Means Death panel at New York Comic Con 2023 was a delightful and entertaining event. The cast, including Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby), Blackbeard (Taika Waititi), and other talented actors, brought their unique humor and camaraderie to the stage. While they couldn’t discuss the show due to the SAG-AFTRA strike rules, they answered questions from the moderator with wit and charm.
Funniest Person in the Room
One of the questions posed to the cast was who they thought was the funniest person in the room. Each cast member had their own opinion, and the answers were both amusing and endearing. It was clear that the cast had a great rapport and enjoyed each other’s company.
Ordering Dessert First
Another lighthearted question asked was who was most likely to order dessert first. The cast had a good laugh at this question and shared their thoughts. It was a playful moment that showcased their camaraderie and sense of humor.
Adventures with Aliens
The cast was also asked who was most likely to go on an adventure with aliens. This question sparked some interesting responses, including Rhys Darby’s revelation that he had seen a UFO. The cast’s answers showed their imaginative and adventurous spirits.
Making Friends Anywhere
The question of who was likely to make a new friend anywhere they go led to some self-deprecating humor. Nathan Foad, who plays Stede’s scribe Lucius Sprigg, wrote on his whiteboard, “Me, Not to Be a Bitch,” and playfully boasted about his friendly nature. Matthew Maher, who portrays Black Pete, jokingly suggested that it would be the title of Foad’s memoir.
Surviving a Zombie Apocalypse
In a humorous twist, the cast was asked which member would most likely survive a zombie apocalypse. Nathan Foad, always quick with a witty response, nominated Matthew Maher, citing his ability to “weasel” his way through. The playful banter between the cast members added to the fun atmosphere of the panel. Selfies with Bigfoot The cast had a blast discussing who was most likely to take a selfie with Bigfoot. Rhys Darby, known for his comedic prowess, shared his strategy for approaching the elusive creature. He humorously described the need for camouflage and revealed his affiliation with the Silverbacks in Uganda. Kristian Nairn, who plays Wee John Feeney, surprised everyone with his whiteboard confession: “I Am Bigfoot.” The cast’s playful responses showed their creativity and
imagination.
Dragon Taming
Vico Ortiz, who portrays Jim Jimenez, revealed his love for dragons when asked who was most likely to tame one. Ortiz expressed his fascination with these mythical creatures and his desire for a dragon that would balance his talkative nature. The panel’s playful discussion highlighted Ortiz’s passion and added a touch of fantasy to the event.
Living in a Fantasy World
Rhys Darby, known for his vibrant imagination, shared his perspective on living in a fantasy world. He acknowledged the challenges of the real world and emphasized the importance of kindness and escapism through fantasy. Darby’s words resonated with the audience, reminding them of the power of imagination.
The Impact of the SAG-AFTRA Strike
Throughout the panel, there were references to the SAG-AFTRA strike and its impact on the cast’s ability to discuss the show freely. Rhys Darby expressed his frustration with the conditions that led to the strike and his hope for a better deal in the future. The cast’s solidarity and support for one another were evident, even in their playful banter.
Conclusion
The Our Flag Means Death panel at NYCC 2023 was a memorable event filled with laughter and camaraderie. The cast’s humor and wit shone through as they navigated the restrictions imposed by the SAG-AFTRA strike rules. Despite not being able to discuss the show directly, the panel showcased the chemistry and talent of the cast, leaving the audience excited for the future of the series.
