Review
Someone Great isn’t your typical romantic comedy. Does it have the cute romantic stuff that make you go “awwww”? Yes. But it also has the hard stuff that relationships are made of – the fights and the tears and the growing distance. All these moments are in flashbacks on the heels of Jenny (Gina Rodriguez) and Nate’s (LaKeith Stanfield) sudden break up after a 9-year relationship. You see, Jenny’s this amazing music journalist who got an incredible job with Rolling Stone… in California. Not willing to give the long-distance thing a shot, Nate unexpectedly calls it quits with his long-time college sweetheart. Jenny’s devastated and shocked, as to be expected, and her best friends, Blair (Brittany Snow) and Erin (DeWanda Wise), are just as surprised. In an effort to take her mind off Nate and spend some quality time with her BFFs before moving across the country, Jenny convinces her friends to ditch work and distract her from wallowing in sadness for one last night out in NYC.
As I said, this isn’t your typical rom-com. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of comedic gold moments. Like Jenny drunkenly jamming around her apartment kitchen in a t-shirt and undies, Blair – the more conservative, uptight friend – being high while Erin has a serious conversation with her love interest, the girls getting ready for their night out, when they try to pick up VIP tickets from some random guy at his place. Actually, all three of the girls, in general, have such fantastic comedic timing and chemistry together. This movie is more than all that rom-com stuff, though. It’s brutally honest about love and commitment and heartbreak. Realizing that sometimes your person isn’t always the person you’re meant to be with. Moving on and letting go of what’s not right for you anymore. Most importantly, Someone Great is about the beauty of friendship and doing what’s best for yourself, no matter how painful or terrifying it may be.
