We finally made it, speedsters! After a somewhat, in my opinion, underwhelming season, we’ve finally reached the season finale. As I stated in previous reviews, I’ve been kind of bored this season. However, the season finale didn’t disappoint. While it’s not the best season finale, it’s definitely better than a lot of the episodes this season. A lot happened so let’s jump into it before I start rambling.
Finding the “Good” in Clifford DeVoe
The finale episode kicks off with police Captain Singh leaving Barry a message about giving him his job back. He’s read Iris’ blog about DeVoe and has realized maybe Barry wasn’t in the wrong after all. Took ya long enough, Singh! Anyways, his voicemail gets interrupted when DeVoe shuts down all the tech in the city – power, phones, cars, you name it. The Enlightenment is starting, and Team Flash has to scramble to stop it.
The outage brings Joe and Cecile to STAR Labs because she’s having contractions! But the power goes out there too. Thankfully, they have a generator and they realize what DeVoe is doing. Caitlin says she can deliver the baby, but then Iris brings in Marlize to help stop her husband. Her idea? Use Cecile’s pregnancy powers to connect Barry’s mind to DeVoe’s so he can find “the good in Clifford” that she knows is still in there somewhere. Sounds easy enough, right? Haha, we should know better than that. So, Barry gets hooked up to The Thinker chair while Cecile attaches that gadget thing to her forehead. It works, and Barry enters DeVoe’s mind through the same portal he exited the speed force at the beginning of the season. He has to hide from “Thinker Clifford” until Marlize tells him to go to the DeVoe home. He does as told, but it’s completely empty. Time to think of somewhere else to look.
Feeling the need to help in what little way he can, a barely verbal Harry sneaks off to his office. Cisco finds him, and Harry emotionally begs Cisco to put the thinking cap on him. Cisco refuses at first because it will only fry what little Harry has left, but Harry insists. So, Cisco does it. Harry suggests Barry go to the place where Clifford and Marlize first fell in love – Oxford.
Clone Attack
So, Barry goes to Oxford where Marlize and Clifford had their first dance on a picnic, but he still doesn’t find the good Clifford. In a surprise twist, he finds Ralph (!) whose consciousness is being held hostage by DeVoe. Barry gives him the low down and Ralph suggests they look in Clifford’s old classroom/office. Unfortunately, they find the Clifford their looking for, but he’s been stabbed to death. Now what??
Back at STAR Labs, Cecile is still contracting and its disrupting her mental connection with Barry. Marlize informs the team that if Cecile gives birth, her powers will be gone, and Barry will be trapped in Clifford’s mind. Cool. Glad you mentioned that sooner, Marlize.
Anyway, the team can tell that Clifford is zeroing in on them, and soon enough he’s there. Ever the smarty-pants, Cisco puts up a force field and stops Clifford from getting any closer. Marlize then transports everyone in the lab to the DeVoe lair pocket dimension where Harry starts muttering the same things Barry did when he came out of the speed force.Elsewhere in Clifford’s mind, Ralph and Barry are getting attacked by a bunch of DeVoe clones. They get close to the portal and Barry realizes that if Ralph can get through the portal, then he’ll regain control of his body and Clifford DeVoe will cease to exist. Smart thinking, Bar! They have to get through the clones first, though. So, they start fighting them off, but more and more just keep appearing. Barry comments that the clones can predict their movements by reading their minds, so Ralph suggests to just think of anything else while fighting. He chooses shrimp while Barry thinks of Iris, and they power through.
In the pocket dimension, Clifford gets in and quickly knocks everyone but Joe and Cecile to the side. Joe points his gun at Clifford, but Clifford just forces him to turn it on himself. Somehow, I think with the help of Cecile, Joe resists and turns it back on Clifford, but Clifford still throws him against a wall. Then he mind-strangles (?) Cecile! Why? I don’t know, but thankfully Barry comes through the portal and Ralph gets control of his body again. Yay! I’m happy Ralph is back.
A Helping Hand
Now that Clifford is no more, Marlize can now shut down the Enlightenment/ the satellites he was mentally controlling. Unfortunately, this doesn’t mean they’re out of the woods yet. You see, since Clifford was the one to send the satellites into orbit, one is now falling and heading straight for Central City… fast. I think all the gibberish that Barry and now Harry were mumbling about referred to the shrapnel of the satellites raining over the city? I’m not sure.
Anyways, Cisco, Ralph and Barry manage to get a lot of people out of the way, but there’s still the problem of the giant satellite body still rapidly falling. Barry gets the idea to give it a sonic punch, but as Marlize points out to Iris, based on the size of the satellite, it would destroy Barry rather than the satellite. As to be expected, Barry still goes for it. Only, he’s not alone. As he’s running there’s a purple streak not far behind him! Just as Barry punches the satellite, so does the purple streak. The double sonic punch works, and Central City is saved once again! The purple streak disappears, however, as the crowd applauds The Flash.Back in the lab, Marlize hands over a device to restore Harry’s intelligence. Barry and Iris invite her to join the team, but she turns down the offer. Instead, she’s going back to helping underprivileged communities with her inventions.
The device that Marlize handed over, does restore Harry’s intelligence… to a certain degree. I would say that he’s still intelligent, but not 7-PhDs intelligent. Instead, his IQ and EQ are on the same level now, I guess. Therefore, he’s still smart, but he’s also gained a more emotional side. That’s a good thing, right? He decides to head back to Earth 2 because he feels the need to visit his daughter. Why did I get the vibe that he wasn’t coming back for a while? I mean, I’m sure he will eventually. It just felt like a goodbye sort of.
Baby West and Nora
In case you’re wondering what happened to Joe and Cecile, they had the baby! They return home to a welcome home party (that was put together pretty fast) and announce that her name is Jenna Marie West! Wally shows up and let’s his dad know that being a Legend has helped him become his own speedster (instead of living in Barry’s shadow). Barry gets SUPER flustered when Iris mentions that they’re next to have kids – not anytime soon, of course – and it’s stinkin’ adorable.Speaking of West-Allen kiddos… mystery girl shows up. Everyone recognizes her from the coffee shop and the wedding. Barry notices her jacket and says Iris has one just like it (her speedster jacket). The girl claims that someone let her borrow it, but Iris states that it was one-of-a-kind. Then mystery girl drops the bombshell that she’s Nora Allen, Barry and Iris’ daughter from the future! This really doesn’t seem to shock Barry or Iris, which I’m kind of surprised by. But then Nora drops another bomb by saying she thinks she made a big mistake!
Could it be that Nora’s been messing with time a bit too much like her dad once did? That helping Barry sonic punch the satellite might just have altered her whole life?
Guess we’ll see next season!
