In this week’s episode of The Flash, there are multiple storylines going on. Ralph realizes that being a superhero isn’t primarily about catching the bad guy, it’s about protecting the innocent. The meta of the week is klepto that can bring inanimate objects to life and control them with her mind. Meanwhile, Harry calls upon his new friends to find DeVoe. The question is, is who they find the bad guy they’re looking for?
Superhero 101
At the start of the episode, Barry buys Ralph coffee (for the fifth time). As they’re walking down the sidewalk, they get approached by a mugger. They remain calm and collected as Barry sees it as the perfect time for a superhero lesson. Ralph contemplates turning into a slingshot and they get into a little argument about it. They end up talking too much and the mugger shoots Ralph. Fortunately for Ralph, the bullet bounces right out of him and into the mugger… multiple times. Barry tells him to stop, but it’s not something Ralph can control. It leaves Barry no choice but to flash the mugger to the hospital. Ralph later gives Barry grief about letting the mugger get away, but Barry says it’s not always about catching the bad guys. This is a recurring theme for Ralph during this episode.
The Black Bison
After an incident where a man was mauled to death by an inanimate statue, Team Flash realize they have a new meta on their hands. Ralph can’t remember who all was on the bus with him, so they decide to take him to get hypnotized so he can possibly remember. He doesn’t believe it will work, but it doesn’t take long for him to be proven wrong. First, he sees some guy, but then he sees a girl with a bison on the back of her jacket. With that information and some lab research, they’ve found their meta of the week.
She goes by the code name Black Bison but her real name is Mina, and she has quite the record – even before becoming a meta. She’s part of the Sioux tribe, and she’s made it her mission to be an activist for them in getting Sioux artifacts back from museums and collectors. Her meta power? She can make inanimate objects come to life and mind control them to do whatever she wants… like kill whoever gets in her way of the Sioux artifacts. Before Ralph and Barry head out to confront the meta, Cisco gives Ralph a prototype suit, which Ralph isn’t too pleased with. I have to agree with him, it looks awful, but I guess if it gets the job done? Anyways, Barry and Ralph suit up and find Mina just as she’s stealing another artifact on its way to a museum. She nearly gets away after seeking another artifact statue on them, but Ralph stretches his arm out to grab her car and cause her to eventually crash. Unfortunately, his ego of putting the bad guy before innocent bystanders causes a young girl to get hit by a falling telephone pole. The incident visibly shakes him.
Later, Mina breaks out of her cuffs and jail by stealing an officer’s name tag and manipulating a demonstration mannequin to terrorize all the officers and bust her out. Barry and Ralph catch up to her at the museum to get her hands on more Sioux artifacts. She uses all the artifacts to her advantage and manipulates a T-rex skeleton to come to life and knock the guys around a bit. Ralph literally wraps himself around the jaws of the T-rex while Barry takes advantage of the distraction. He distracts Mina by tossing a Sioux bowl into the air, forcing Mina to want to catch it. Her hands fly up in the air and he cuffs her with meta-dampening handcuffs. Another meta caught!
We later learn that Ralph swiped the Sioux necklace she was after and mailed it off to the reserve. He also went to the hospital and visited the young girl that got hurt thanks to him. He makes her laugh by using his limbs to make balloon animals.
The Council of Wells
The team still has no idea who this DeVoe guy is, and none of their methods of hunting him down are working. So, Harry suggests that it’s time he calls in his friends… WHAT? Harry has friends? This is the general reaction from everyone in the lab. Harry doesn’t see it as a big deal. He was given the task of making new friends, so he completed the task. Cisco, for one, is so proud of him. However, when Cisco joins Harry to meet these new friends with snacks and beer, they’re not exactly what he expected. They’re all just Harry’s doppelgangers from different Earths, which are all hilarious. Unfortunately, Wells gets annoyed by them pretty quick when no one can agree on a method – calling them incompetent, arrogant, uncooperative, and every other negative quality that he has himself. Cisco is quick to point this out, but also gives Harry a little pep talk on liking himself and treating himself with compassion, which will help him like the other Harrys. Aw sweet Cisco. I love this friendship.
So, Harry gets the gang back together and forces them to apologize to each other. They then use all their smarts to identify this DeVoe guy they’re looking for – Clifford DeVoe. After informing the team and finding Clifford DeVoe’s information, Barry decides they should confront him on their own as soon as possible. Since, for the first time, they’re actually a few steps ahead of this guy (or so they think), it might be easier to defeat him.
It should be noted that earlier in the episode, DeVoe and his assistant knew all along that Team Flash was on their tail. DeVoe isn’t worried about it. In fact, he anticipated the situation.
So, when Barry and Joe show up at their door, they’re prepared. The assistant opens the door as an ordinary and concerned wife before her “husband”, Clifford DeVoe, comes out in a wheelchair. He’s not hooked up to machines or look weird. He looks normal.
Will Barry and the team buy into this or will they realize something’s off?
