This week the boys investigate a seemingly harmless woman running over her husband. When they arrive, they discover that Garth is also on the case, so naturally they team up. They quickly realize that Garth has taken over the Bobby role, giving information to other hunters when they need it. After several more brutal murders, they discover that it’s a specter, and go to burn his bones. Unfortunately, the killing doesn’t stop, and they realize that it’s an item. Dean manages to get a hold of it, but it possesses him and he attacks Sam, both verbally and physically. Garth steps in, and when Dean still doesn’t listen to reason, Garth hits him, making him drop the item. Garth and Dean have a heart-to-heart of sorts to clear the air (they’d argued earlier over Garth’s use of phrases similar to Bobby), before Garth leaves, finally getting some of Bobby’s catchphrases right. The episode ends with Sam finally getting his turn to have a go at Dean, saying that he’d been honest straight away when Dean had returned, whereas Dean was the one keeping secrets, and that one day, it might be him that ices Benny.
It was another strong episode, and this one had the added humor provided by Garth (who is quickly becoming a favorite character). The dynamic between the boys also seemed to shift a little this week, maybe balancing out a little more, and I look forward to seeing how that develops over the course of the season.
