It picks up the storyline directly following last season’s finale, with Elena in transition, Stefan trying desperately to find a way to stop it, and Damon annoyed at Stefan and Matt. The Founder’s Council strip Sheif Forbes and Mayor Lockwood of their titles, and detain Caroline and Rebekah, until Klaus (in Tyler’s body) discovers this, and frees Caroline. Stefan and Elena are captured, leaving Damon, Matt and Sheffie Forbes to come up with a plan to rescue them.
There are some emotional scenes as Stefan and Elena have a heart to heart, and in the end it’s Rebekah that saves Elena from dying, clearly affected by how in love the 2 are, and how little love she has in her life (even Klaus chose Caroline over her). Meanwhile, Bonnie tries using dark magic to save Elena, and is stopped by her Grams and told never to use it again. After Klaus threatens to rip out Tyler’s heart if he isn’t placed back in his own body, Bonnie uses the dark magic again, and Grams appears to stop her. The spirits punish Grams for Bonnie’s use of dark magic again, and we’re left wondering what exactly has happened. Klaus and Rebekah have a reunion at the Mikaelson house, with Rebekah angry at Klaus for leaving her. She destroys his doppelganger blood so he can’t make more hybrids, and in return Klaus snaps her neck and walks away. The episode ends with Stefan and Elena sharing a moment on the roof of the Salvatore Mansion (and Elena gettin a daylight ring), and then Pastor Young blowing up the Founder’s Council with a gas explosion.
It was a very strong returning episode, and I’m looking forward to seeing where they take the series, and what other surprises they have in store for us.
